bluegrass blend sod for do it yourself or professional installation

Supplying Tall Fescue Blend Sod for DIY and Contractors

Tall Fescue Blend – Retail Turf Pricing and Specifications

We offer two blends of Tall Fescue sod: 70% tall fescue/20% bluegrass/10% ryegrass (also known as Black Beauty); and 60% tall fescue/40% bluegrass. Both blends offer better drought and shade tolerance than bluegrass alone. We recommend Black Beauty Tall Fescue sod (70/20/10) for most residential applications, since it grows well in sun or shade, requires less water and fertilizer once established, and has a uniform growth habit with excellent wear tolerance. Pricing and specifications for Tall Fescue Blend Sods are listed below. For homeowners and landscaping contractors, we offer sod sales to customers in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maine, Vermont, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. TALL FESCUE BLEND SOD CHARACTERISTICS

Tall Fescue Blend sod has a natural, dark green color and a uniform leaf texture. When properly watered and fertilized it can maintain its color throughout the year. It is a “turf type” tall fescue which grows thick and dense, giving it excellent wear tolerance.

RECOMMENDED USAGE FOR TALL FESCUE BLEND SOD

Recommended for both residential and commercial lawns.

TEMPERATURE TOLERANCE

Tall Fescue Blend thrives in both cool and warm weather and will tolerate very cold winters.

DROUGHT RESISTANCE

Tall Fescue Blend sod is much more resistant to drought than bluegrass alone. Requires 30% to 50% less water than bluegrass once established.

SHADE ADAPTATION

Tall Fescue Blend sod grows well in full sun but also tolerates shade well. Requires at least 4 hours of filtered sunlight per day for best results.

TALL FESCUE BLEND LAWN MAINTENANCE

Taking good care of your lawn often requires no more work overall than taking poor care of it. A lawn that is properly mowed, fertilized and watered has far fewer problems with weeds, diseases and insects. A well-kept lawn also remains dense and attractive, providing you much more enjoyment and environmental benefits.

WATER NEEDS

Although Tall Fescue Blend sod has superior drought tolerance, it is important to supply adequate water for the first year or two until it has established a deep root system. Apply 0.5 to 1 inch of water as a deep soaking every 5 to 7 days. This will encourage a deep healthy root system during dry or hot periods. Avoid frequent, shallow watering that results in shallow roots, permitting weed germination and growth.

MOWING AND THATCHING

Tall Fescue Blend sod’s optimum mowing height is 2 to 3 inches for a high quality lawn. Mow regularly with a sharp rotary or reel mower. Allow clippings from frequent mowing to remain on the lawn. Never remove more than 1/3 of the shoot growth at one mowing. This type of sod forms very little thatch.

SOIL AND FERTILIZATION NEEDS

Adapts to a wide range of soil conditions. Has a rather deep, extensive root system for a cool-season grass that makes excellent use of soil moisture and mineral nutrients. Has good tolerance to saline soil conditions. Fertilize twice a year, spring and fall, with a complete fertilizer containing nitrogen, phosphate and potassium. Apply N at 2 to 4 lbs. per sq. ft. per year. Will respond well to high nitrogen applications to achieve a higher quality turf. Water thoroughly after fertilization.

DISEASE, WEED, AND INSECT CONTROL

The genetically superior varieties in Tall Fescue Blend sod enable it to withstand many insects and diseases. It also contains natural endophytes which produce defensive alkaloids that are toxic to many surface feeding insect pests. This greatly reduces the need for fungicides and insecticides. All information is based on average/normal conditions. Individual sites and situations may differ. Therefore, contact your local nursery or county Extension Office for more detailed information on specific maintenance questions.
