Native Sod: Hay Scented Fern

Dennstaedtia punctilobula

When you need to fill an area quickly with native plantings that prevent erosion and are resistant to deer, hay scented fern is an excellent choice. If you are wondering how it gets its name, it’s because the foliage smells like fresh hay when you crush it between your fingers.

Hay scented fern has a fresh, spring green color in spring and summer, while the fall season brings a golden hue to the foliage. Since this native fern spreads easily, we recommend planting it in large, shaded areas that you need to fill quickly.

About Hay Scented Fern Native Sod

Hay scented fern native sod thrives in light to heavy shade and prefers well-drained soil that’s rich in organic matter. It will also tolerate partial sun, especially if it’s morning sun rather than hot afternoon sun. This native sod is hardy in USDA hardiness zones 3 through 8, so keep your zone in mind.

As with most ferns, hay scented ferns require consistent moisture. So be sure to water at times when rainfall is not sufficient. Adding a two-inch layer of mulch consisting of composted leaves or pine needles will help retain moisture and keep the roots cool.

We recommend fertilizing in early spring with a slow-release fertilizer. If necessary, treat for slugs and snails in late spring by applying bait or diatomaceous earth around the base of the fronds. When the foliage dies back after a heavy frost in fall, cut it down to soil level and protect with mulch through winter. Doing so will help to prevent ferns from heaving out of the soil during winter.
